AI and breast cancer screenings

Dr Gerald Lip, Clinical Director of North-East breast screening programme at NHS Grampian and Ken Sutherland, President, Canon Medical Research Europe outline the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist radiologists examine breast cancer mammograms.

The project, a collaboration with the Industrial Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD), is looking at 80,000 sets of mammograms taken between 2016 and 2019 to prove AI can successfully be deployed as a 'second pair of eyes'. This has multiple benefits including tackling recruitment challenges in radiology, accelerating the turnaround time for results and enabling clinicians to spend more time with patients.
